  • Waiting for news on Stephanie?

I have had sporadic talks with Bernadette. She has been pretty well tied up (both in time and emotionally) with trying to find a placement for Stephanie whenever the rehab hospital releases her. Fortunately, there is no firm word on her release yet. We feel that is God's grace, because Stephanie continues to improve, meaning a better chance of placement for her. Bernadette is looking at nursing homes in southwest Missouri. So far, none of them has definitely said they would take Stephanie.

Let's start with the good news. Wednesday Stephanie's children came to visit with her. You can imagine the joy that filled all involved. At first, the kids were tentative and reserved, but first her daughter, then her twin, then the baby relaxed and had a good time with their mother. None of them wanted to leave when the time was up. The woman who has custody of the kids told them that they could come back and visit with Momma, soon. It was a banner day. Afterwards Stephanie was overcritical of her own actions, but Bernadette hastened to direct her attention to the positive events.

Last week, Bernadette told me that she played chess with Stephanie. Stephanie remembered how to move the pieces, but at first did not put any effort into strategy. Later in the week, Bernadette noticed that Stephanie was beginning to plan ahead. Bernadette was very encouraged.

Bernadette made a point to say: "This is for the blog" So I need to tell this story:

Of course the other patients on the ward with Stephanie are particularly difficult cases. Most are in the state where they are especially agitated.  Stephanie's interaction with them has undergone a change. At first, she found their agitation annoying. "[That one] needs to chill out." she remarked during her first week. A few weeks ago, she began reacting with compassion. Bernadette noticed that the stuffed animals were beginning to disappear from Stephanie's room. One day Bernadette saw one of the other patients carrying one of Stephanie's stuffed animals. At first Bernadette was concerned, until she determined that Stephanie gave the man the critter. Soon, other plush beasts were distributed around the ward. Bernadette found this very moving and, of course encouraging.

Stephanie is calmer than she had been, but the psychologist is not ready to trust he on a regular ward. It she can successfully get out on that floor for 5 days her placement choices are much improved. Please keep Stephanie in your prayers for continued healing. Bernadette is also asking for continued prayer for wisdom in making the decisions necessary for Stephanie to get the most effective placement possible, balancing all the factors.
